Information about the Satellite
Oceanography Data Laboratory
Through funding from NERACOOS and distributed other grants for research in the Gulf of Maine,
the laboratory operates a direct internet-based wide-band link to NOAA satellite receiving sites. The connection
downloads each day the data stream from NOAA polar orbiting weather satellites, measuring sea surface temperature.
These data, as well as ocean color data from NASA sateliites, are processed to ocean products on a cluster of Linux
workstations hosting a comprehensive suite of digital
image processing and GIS software and peripherals. These data products are used for ocean research in the lab,
distributed to interested associates, and used for both graduate and undergraduate research in the School of Marine Sciences.
The Lab is part of The University
of Maine Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing
Applications. A cross-disciplinary initiative
funded by the University of Maine and NASA's MISSION to
PLANET EARTH
